Two Items. 1) Original Japanese WWII Imperial Japanese Army Shussei Nobori Silk Banner. When Japanese men left for their military service, community organizations such as the local branch of the Imperial Reservists Association (teikoku zaigo gunjinkai) and the Greater Japan National Defense Women’s Association (dai nippon kokubo fujinkai) organized various celebrations, culminating in send-off parades to wish the troops well as they marched off to the local railway stations or ports. These send-off ceremonies were called sokokai and the participants in parades carried banners with the names of the recruits on them. The Japanese term for banner is nobori, and the exact Japanese name for them depends on the slogan. Here we refer to them as a “shussei nobori” or “Off To War Banners”. Measures 52" length, 15" wide. Depicts the Japanese National flag and the Rising Sun" battle flag on crossed staffs. Yellow tassels on the bottom. On aluminum pole with yellow tassels on each end. Overall very good condition, vibrant colors, has a few small holes and wear to the silk. We have been unable to translate the Kanji that is painted on it. 2) Japanese WW2 National flag signed with Kanji messages. Yosigaki Hinomaru flag. (Basically, good luck, signed by friends and family back home). 65" length. 48" wide. Thick cotton two sided. Red circles are sewn on each side. reinforced top with rope ties, signed on both sides. Has some fraying and tears around the circle and fraying to the bottom edge, some staining but overall very good/intact. Unique signature of the 16 pedal Chrysanthemum, the symbol of the Emperor. The top right corner has rust colored spatter which appears to be blood.
