[japan] General Count Noghi Maresuke (1849-1912) General in the Imperial Japanese Army and a governor of Taiwan. In the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5, he was commander of the forces which captured Port Arthur from the Russians. A national hero in Imperial Japan, he was considered a model of feudal loyalty and self-sacrifice. On Sept. 13, 1912, General Noghi and his wife committed ritual suicide by seppuku (disembowelment). It was the day of Emperor Meiji's funeral. Bold signature of General Noghi in Japanese on pale blue paper, 4½ x 6¼ in. Also, his signature in English ("Count Noghi, Maresuke") on a 3½ x 1¼ in. piece of paper.
