Original semi-glossy 8.25 x 10.5 portrait of Janis Joplin in 1969, showing her dressed in a flowing top and adorned with necklaces and bangle bracelets as she holds a cigarette in a raised hand, taken by legendary fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo. Reverse bears a Francesco Scavullo copyright stamp. In fine condition, with light creasing to the upper right corner. This print was made in the mid-1970’s, and has Scavullo’s copyright stamp on the back, along with a title, date and negative number. Scavullo was best known for his magazine covers for Rolling Stone, Harper’s Bizarre, Seventeen, and Cosmopolitan (for whom he famously shot actor Burt Reynolds for a nude centerfold.) His photographs graced album covers for Barbara Streisand, Judy Collins, Donna Summer and others.

Scavullo recalled: 'I had one fabulous afternoon with Janis Joplin. She stayed the whole afternoon. I loved photographing Janis. I loved meeting her, and she was so different from what I thought she was going to be. She died a year later I think…She walked into the studio and I said, ‘Oh, hi Janis, I’m Scavullo.’ She looked at me and she said, ‘I’d love to f— you, only I got the clap.’'
