Jamestown,CA - Tuolumne County - No Date - Vista of Tailings and Mining Works Photograph :
Lot of 2. Colonel James was a San Francisco lawyer and mining speculator. Photographs measure 7”x5”, gray single mattes with impressed borders 10”x8”, medium contrast—suffers from minor fading and minor yellowing, and the focus is sharp. The corners of the mattes have pin holes and minor wear. Colonel James was active in the area, 1848. Jamestown is located three miles southwest of Sonora. Gudde tells us that Jamestown, “was one of the earliest important towns along the side of Table Mountain…a three pound lump, netting about one pound of pure gold, was found at Jamestown in 1854.” (California Gold Camps) Jamestown was an active mining area through the 1930s. Photograph one depicts three men and a dog sitting on some tailings. Water tanks can be seen in the background. Photograph two is a vista overlooking a mining operation with houses in the background.
