LS signed "Jas. Barbour" and “P. P. Barbour," one page, 6.75 x 7.25, December 21, 1819. Issued from the "House of Representatives," a letter of recommendation, which reads: "From the recommendation of a Gentleman of high respectability we beg leave to introduce to you Mr. Alexander Edmonds of the County of Fauquier and state of Virginia he wishes the appointment of Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, he is from the best information we can obtain a young gentleman of respectable connections and from his character we have no doubt if he succeeds in his application that his conduct will merit the appointment." Signed at the conclusion by Philip Pendleton Barbour, Congressman William Lee Ball, and Philip Pendleton's older brother, Senator James Barbour. In very good to fine condition, with areas of paper loss, and staining to the top and bottom from old mounting remnants on the reverse.
