Scottish doctor (1811-1870) who discovered the anaesthetic properties of chloroform and successfully introduced it for general medical use. Original vintage 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by C. M. Dallas of Edinburgh (and so noted on reverse), signed in the lower border in black ink, “J. Y. Simpson.” A few scattered light surface marks, image peeling from backing at lower right, and mild silvering to darker areas of image, otherwise fine condition. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection.
