James Wyld. 1819 General ATLAS, Containing MAPS
James Wyld. A General ATLAS,

Containing MAPS illustrating some important periods in Ancient History, and distinct MAPS of the several Empires, Kingdoms and States, in the WORLD, From Original Drawings, according to the latest Treaties, by J. Wyld: and Engraved by N.R. Hewitt. Edinburgh: John Thompson & Co., [1819 or 1820].

First edition. Folio. viii, XL, 18 pages. Forty-one copperplate engraved maps (one double-page) and two tables, all hand-colored in outline and on heavy stock. Index.

Contemporary calf-backed boards with original printed paper label on cover, rubbed with some wear. Worn spine gilt-lettered: "Cabinet/ Atlas/ Ancient/ and/ Modern". Light scattered foxing throughout. Maps all fine, book overall very good.

All the maps have small non-colored vignette scenes in one corner. The vignette on the North America map depicts the British Light House at Fort Niagara; the United States vignette depicts the Falls of Niagara. Locations on North America, west of the United States, include California (today, Baja California), New California (with the towns of P. Diego, S. Clemente, Ft. St. Francisco, and C. Mendocino), Texas, S. Antonio, Laredo, New Madrid, and N. Orleans. "W. Florida" and "E. Florida" are south of the United States with no part of the U.S. bordering the Gulf of Mexico. While there is no publishing date in the atlas, Spain ceded all of Florida to the United States in 1819. Since Wyld indicates that the maps are "according to the latest Treaties," the atlas was most probably published in 1819 (some sources list 1820).

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
