It reads in full: For - Mrs. Robert A. Brown - (ne Smith) - With hale esteem and gratitude, her old Hoosier friend - James Whitcomb Riley *See The Smitten Purist. The former Miss Smith must at one time have been the object of Riley's attention. The poem he calls her attention to is fully titled The Smitten Purist and the Charming Miss Smith's Effect Upon Him. The poem in question is a fanciful attempt to rhyme Smith with various concocted words with a lisping theme - O had I a name that would rhyme with Smith/ Thome rhythmical tincture of rethonant blith and so on. The former Miss Smith has used a piece of white yarn to covertly mark the page - perhaps to hide it from her current husband?

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
