Uncommon ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, no date. Letter of introduction, sent to astronomer William Herschel, on behalf of one of Watt’s friends. In part: “I take the liberty of introducing my friend…Mr. Conie who wishes much to make your acquaintence & who you will find a well informed gentleman. Mrs. Watt desires to join me in kind remembrance to you …” Reverse of second integral page bears an address panel in Watt’s hand. In fine condition, with scattered light toning and creasing, and a couple trivial brushes to text. Second integral page has paper loss to top edge and lower right.
One of the greatest engineers ever—James Watt—communicates here with one of the world’s most famous astronomers, William Herschel, who discovered Uranus, two of that planet’s major moons, two moons of Saturn, and infrared radiation. In 1793, Herschel testified in Watt’s behalf during a lawsuit in which he was battling rival steam engine manufacturers. Two manufacturers, Edward Bull and Jonathan Carter Hornblower, had infringed on Watt’s patent for his improvements to the device, leading to a court case that eventually ended in Watt’s favor. Correspondence from Watt is encountered infrequently, with a letter dispatched to an equally historic figure virtually nonexistent.
