The James VIII (pretender to the throne of Scotland) patterns were prepared by Norbert Roettier. It was intended that the coins would be produced and circulated following the capture of the throne. This plan changed dramatically as James fled to France and all of the coins that are known were struck in 1828 by Matthew Young from the original dies.
