James V. Howe Custom Springfield .25 HP #4
Rare & historic collaboration from Philadelphia, P.A. riflesmith James V. Howe & New York City, N.Y. engraver Seymour R. Griffin, circa 1920's. The pair would soon after form the iconic Griffin & Howe, Inc., a name synonymous with superb craftsmanship in the golden age of American custom rifle making. The barrel is marked "No. 4 Jas. V. Howe Phila. PA." and the engraving is signed "S. R. GRIFFIN, NEW YORK" on the floorplate. Configuration: Fine scroll engraved featuring gold inlays with an intertwined "WM" monogram on the floorplate, bust of a buck whitetail deer on the trigger guard & bust of a mountain goat on the grip cap, blued finish, 24" tapered barrel chambered in .25-05 Remington, ramped & hooded blade front sight with bead top, bolt mounted Lyman 103 adjustable peep sight, serrated trigger, three-position safety, blued bolt with turned-down handle, internal box magazine with engine turned follower, swivel studs and cotemporary deluxe fiddleback French walnut pistol grip shoulder stock by Bob Hooper with schnabel forend, fine hand checkering in a bordered point pattern, beaded right handed pancake cheekpiece, original steel pistol grip cap & the original case hardened cartridge trap buttplate. According to the notes left by Jim Wilkinson the original stock had broken during shipment. Rifle retains approximately 95%+ original bluing showing slide wear on the bolt, some minor handling marks and a small amount of light scattered pitting. Action is smooth, the bore is excellent, markings are crisp and the deluxe wood stock is fine though slightly proud at the grip cap & buttplate. Condition is NRA Fine. ***C&R Firearm*** [From the Jim Wilkinson Rifle Ranch Collection]
