Twice-signed book: Thurber's Men, Women and Dogs. First edition. NY: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1943. Hardcover with dust jacket, 6.5 x 9.5, 199 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in black ink, "For Harriet and Kisses, Jim, James Thurber," who signs again upside down on the rear free end page, "For Harriet, with love, Jim, James Thurber." In fine condition, with light wear to the dust jacket. "Kisses" is the name of the recipient's pet dog and the reason for Thurber's second inverted autograph, according to the consignor, was due to Thurber's worsening sympathetic ophthalmia, a condition in which an undamaged eye can react to an injured one because of the body’s immune response; the famed cartoonist of The New Yorker lost his left eye at the age of six when his brother shot him an arrow during a game of William Tell.
