This is a top quality heavy duty steel, socket corner chisel marked "THE JAMES SWAN" on the steel. The name stamp is not very deep, but the name can be seen. It measures 15.7" long x 7/8" wide. If you are wondering about the quality of James Swan chisels, I would rate them as top shelf. The James Swam Co. made various edge tools, but were best known for the heavy duty framing chisels in their day. Their beveled back slicks are the most sought after framing chisel in the world to my knowledge, and their are far too few to go around. There edge tools were made of very good quality steel, and well machined to hold a long lasting edge. The handle is very solid, looks like ash, solid fit, appears to be the original type with the cast ring on the end of the handle! The steel is very clean, particularly around the cutting edge area, very little staining, some minor pitting on the softer steel around the socket, sharp cutting edge, some minor side edge wear, and no cracks, or rust. A very nice, clean, sharp corner framing chisel overall! A hard to find size!
