DS, eight pages, 8.5 x 13, October 11, 1974. Mutual release agreement between James Stewart and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for his contract associated with the television series Hawkins. In part: "Reference is hereby made to that certain unsigned Agreement…whereby MGM engaged Company to furnish the services of Artist to portray the role of 'Billy Jim Hawkins' in connection with the television pilot film entitled 'Hawkins on Murder.' In addition, reference is made to that certain unsigned agreement…whereby MGM engaged Company to furnish the services of Artist for the 1973–74 broadcast season to portray the aforementioned role in connection with the MGM television series based upon said pilot and entitled 'Hawkins'…and more particularly to the option…granted under said Agreement according MGM the right to engage Artist's services for the 1974–75 broadcast season…by virtue of Artist's notification to MGM that in the event MGM exercised its Option under the Television Agreement, Artist would not, for reasons of health, appear in more than four (4) episodes of the Series during the Second Contract Year, both Company and Artist have refused to perform their contractual obligations." Signed at the conclusion in blue ballpoint by Stewart and two company representatives. In fine condition. Although Stewart won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in Television Drama for his portrayal of Billy Jim Hawkins, he felt like the quality of scripts and directors in television did not meet the same standards as those he was accustomed to for theatrical films; by declining to fulfill the option in his contract, he essentially forced the show to be canceled.
