Two items: a TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, June 11, 1986, addressed to Matthew Stiller of Hobbs, New Mexico, in full: "First, I apologize for being so very late in answering your letter which you wrote last March. It got lost in the shuffle somehow and I just came upon it yesterday. It's a very kind letter and I'm very grateful to you for writing it—and the kind words you had to say about my pictures mean a great deal to me. Hobbs, New Mexico will always mean a lot to me because it was there at the Hobbs Air Base in 1942 that I learned to fly the B–17 bomber. Thank you again for your kind and thoughtful letter." Also includes a glossy 7.75 x 9.75 full-length photo of Stewart as Charles Lindbergh in the 1957 film The Spirit of St. Louis, signed in black felt tip. Reverse of photo bears three Pictorial Parade stamps and an affixed caption stating: "Popular star James Stewart…has been nominated by President Eisenhower for the rank of brigadier general. Stewart is the first actor in history to achieve this rank…[and] distinguished himself during World War II, flying 25 bombing missions over Germany. He was a colonel before his discharge." In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
