James Sinton Sleator PRHA (1885-1950) L
James Sinton Sleator PRHA (1885-1950) LANDSCAPE WITH FARM BUILDINGS AND TREES, circa 1907-9 signed lower right; exhibition label on reverse oil on board 43 by 58cm., 17 by 23in. Provenance: S.E. Thompson Esq., Belfast; Private collection, Dublin; Gorry Gallery, Dublin; Jorgenson Fine Art, Dublin; Whence purchased by the present owner Exhibited: ’An Exhibition of 18th, 19th and 20th century Irish Painting’, Gorry Gallery, Dublin, 30 October – 12 November 1992, catalogue no. 14 (illustrated) S. B. Kennedy has written of this work: “This is perhaps the best surviving example of Sleator’s landscape work. The picture was probably painted in County Armagh and the group of buildings closely resembles those in two other of his early landscapes. His brushwork and handling of the trees, with their boldly linear character, typify his work at this time, but the use of strong colours and contrasting reds and greens hint at his brief association with the more avant-garde artists of the Society of Dublin Painters in the early 1920s. S.E. Thompson, a Belfast estate agent and property broker, was one of Sleator’s earliest patrons and acquired a number of his pictures, including his Self-Portrait of c.1914-15, now in the National Gallery of Ireland (4493), and his study of Mrs. MacNamara, Armagh County Museum”.
