American writer and diplomat (1819–1891) who, after a long and successful career as a poet, satirist, and essayist, served as minister to the court of Spain. Original vintage 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite seated portrait of Lowell by Black and Batchelder of Boston, and so noted on reverse, signed in the lower border in black ink, “J. R. Lowell.” In fine condition, with some scattered light spotting to image. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection.
