ALS signed “J. R. Lowell,” one page, 4.5 x 7.25, Legation of the United Nations letterhead, February 11, 1883. Letter to General Samuel W. Crawford. In full: “I am much obliged & gratified by your recollection of me, & have read with great interest the account of the very appropriate recognition of your gallant & devoted services which you have been kind enough to send me.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a bit of scattered light soiling. Accompanied by Crawford’s four-page handwritten petition to the Senate and House of Representatives, stating that he served at Fort Sumter, was wounded at Antietam, and also Gettysburg, petitioning Congress to be retired as a Brevet Major General.

Nine years before writing this letter to Crawford, a surgeon and Union general during the Civil War, Lowell resigned from a Harvard University professorship. In 1876 the famed Romantic poet entered the world of politics as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Cincinnati, speaking on behalf of presidential candidate Rutherford B. Hayes. In January 1880, in keeping with the pattern of 19th century American life, Lowell spent his last years as a representative of America after his appointment as Minister to the Court of St. James in England.
