American writer and diplomat (1819–1891) who, after a long and successful career as a poet, satirist, and essayist, served as minister to the court of Spain. Bank check, 8 x 2.75, filled out in another hand and signed by Lowell, payable to renowned Boston physician Edward Newton Whittier for $33.00, September 14, 1876. In very good condition, with several vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, two punch holes to body, a blue pencil cancellation, a bit of light toning, and a revenue stamp affixed to left side, initialled by Lowell.
