Randall has penned the second stanza of his nine stanza poem, “Maryland! My Maryland!” on stationery of The Augusta Chronicle: “Hark to an exiled son's appeal,/Maryland!/My mother State, to thee I kneel,/Maryland!/For life and death, for woe and weal,/Thy peerless chivalry reveal,/And gird they beauteous limbs with steel,/Maryland! My Maryland!” After hearing of the death in of a friend involved in a skirmish with Union troops marching through Baltimore on April 19, 1861, Baltimore-born James R.
