Uncommon partly-printed vellum DS, signed at the conclusion, “James K. Polk,” as president, and “James Buchanan,” as secretary of state, one page, 16.5 x 12.5, March 24, 1846. President Polk appoints Peter G. Washington an “Auditor of the Treasury for the Post Office Department.” Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of Buchanan’s signature, impression to edges from previous display, and some scattered light toning and wrinkling, otherwise fine condition. The white wafer seal is lightly toned, but intact. During this period Polk was just beginning US involvement in a war with Mexico. The combination of Polk and Buchanan signed documents is highly desirable and becoming increasingly difficult to find.
