James Polk Autograph Letter Signed to a Dedicated Supporter. Eleventh President (1845-1849). Attractive autographed letter signed "James K. Polk" as Governor of Tennessee, one page, 8" x 10", September 22, 1841, Nashville, to Col. Samuel H. Laughlin, with the integral address leaf attached, marked "Private." Polk writes: "I write you hastily, only to say that most of the democratic members have been written to, and all of them are expected to be here, by Tuesday or Wednesday. Yourself and your colleagues must not fail to be here by that time." Laughlin unsuccessfully supported Polk for the vice-presidency in 1840. Polk was a Congressman and House Speaker, but resigned to become Governor of Tennessee. Nominated by the Democrats against the heavily favored Clay, he won because he favored the annexation of Texas. This, however, led to war with Mexico, after which America acquired much of the Southwest. Polk also acquired Oregon and Washington from England and reduced tariff rates. He declined to run for a second term and died three months after leaving office. Condition: Fine.
