American pianist and composer (1894–1955) who, as a pioneer of stride piano, was a key figure in the evolution of ragtime into jazz; perhaps best known as the composer of 'The Charleston,' which became the unofficial anthem of the Roaring Twenties. Rare vintage glossy 8 x 10 publicity photo of Johnson at his piano by James J. Kriegsmann, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To My Friend Kurt Stern from James P. Johnson" and "Best Wishes, James P. Johnson.” In very good to fine condition, with creases and tack holes to the corners, and minor loss to the lower left corner.
