James Otis 1775 Massachusetts Bay Doc Signed
1775 Massachusetts Bay Province Document Signed by James Otis, Benjamin Lincoln, Caleb Cushing, Benjamin Greenleaf, Walter Spooner, John Whitcomb, Moses Gill, and others. One page, 9.5" x 15", partly-printed document with wafer seal, Watertown, Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, September 6, 1775 (just months before the Revolutionary War would start). An appointment of Benjamin Hall "...to be one of Our Justices to keep Our Peace...In the fifteenth year of his Majesty's Reign [George III]..." The signers of this appointment read like a "Who's Who" of early Massachusetts statesman. Of particular interest is the one who signed just beneath the seal, James Otis. He was a prominent Boston attorney and orater, and an early proponent of the views that led to the American Revolution; the phrase "Taxation without Representation is Tyranny" has been attributed to him. This historic document is in about very good condition with some foxing and fold weaknesses. It has been matted and framed to an overall size of 15" x 20.5".
