1936 James Naismith Signed Basketball Program. While the arguments about the Doubleday and Cartwright and the origins of baseball will never be settled, there is no such confusion about the birth of the sport of basketball. It came from the mind of Dr. James Naismith, who invented it at Springfield YMCA College in 1891. Just three years before Dr. Naismith's death, he was honored at the Denver Municipal Auditorium as it hosted the AAU National Basketball Championship of America. This scarce program from the early hardcourt event is afforded one-of-a-kind status by the appearance of a pristine fountain pen signature on page five beside a photograph and brief biography of the sport's inventor. Any fine basketball autograph collection must have a Naismith signature as its anchor, but examples are few and far between. This one is particularly desirable given its placement beside the most famous photo of Naismith, and the program is in fine undamaged condition besides. LOA from PSA/DNA.
