Exceptional Photograph of Springfield Basketball Court. Artful image documents the scene of basketball's birth as it appeared that historic December day. This marvelous sepia photo finds Mr. Stebbins' peach basket nailed to the balcony of the Springfield gym, the ball positioned directly below. Developed from the original negative some years after that historic game, the photo offers a notation from Naismith's daughter on verso, reading, "Gymnasium where first game was played, Dec. 21-1891 - Original basket, Helen Naismith Dodd." While we can't be certain of the exact date of the image itself, the fact that this is notated as the "Original basket," and the fragile nature of these first "hoops," as documented by Naismith himself, guarantees that it dates from the sport's first weeks. The photo measures 5x6.5" in size, cropped at top and bottom.
