War-dated DS, signed “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 7.75 x 10.25, August 28, 1812. A printed circular titled “Additional Instruction to the Public and Private Armed Vessels of the United States.” In full: “The public and private armed vessels of the United States are not to interrupt any vessels belonging to the citizens of the United States coming from British ports to the United States laden with British merchandize, in consequence of the alledged [sic] repeal of the British Orders in Council, but are on the contrary to give aid and assistance to the same; in order that such vessels and their cargoes may be dealt with on their arrival as may be decided by the competent authorities. By command of the President of the United States of America….” Document is addressed at the bottom to “James Phillips, commander of the Private armed Schooner Grecian of Baltimore.” In very good condition, with uniform mild shade of toning, some light spreading of ink to Monroe’s signature, as well as a few spots of ink erosion, small tape remnant to top edge on reverse and moderate show-through from an endorsement on the reverse certifying that Thomas Knap is the Master and Commander of the Schooner Grecian.
