Partly-printed DS, signed “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 6.5 x 10, June 17, 1801. Monroe, as Governor of Virginia appoints Hugh French to the position of “Ensign in the 2d Battalion of the 43 Regiment, in the 12th Brigade and 1st Division of the said militia.” Document is archivally sleeved in acid-free Mylar. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, light toning, and some light show-through from notation on reverse. The wax and paper seal remain intact.
