ALS signed “Ja's Monroe,” one page, 8 x 10, May 12, 1810. Letter to "Mr. Everett," in part: "I returned yesterday from Washington too much fatigued to venture out today…Can you come to dine with me tomorrow? I have the pleasure to inform you that I settled my acct. with the govt. quite to my own & its satisfaction. One point is reserved for consideration. Without taking it into the estimate I owe a balance of less than 200 dollars. If that is decided in my favor, a much greater sum will be due me, or rather to some friends of whom I borrowed money to supply the deficiency of the salary due. Mr. President & heads of departments showed every disposition to do what was fair and just towards me." In very good condition, with a few stains, a block of toning from prior display, and seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf. Monroe makes reference to settling his "account with the government," which concerned the repayment of expenses he accrued during his time as minister to the United Kingdom from 1803 to 1807.
