Partly-printed vellum DS, signed "James Monroe" as president and "John Quincy Adams" as secretary of state, three pages, 11 x 14.5, September 13, 1824. A patent issued to Joseph Buchanan for a "new and useful improvement in the mode of producing Steam for Steam Engines & for other Purposes." Signed at the conclusion by President Monroe and countersigned by Secretary of State Adams. The nicely embossed seal with green ribbon remains affixed to the lower left. The second and third pages contain Buchanan's description of his invention. In very good to fine condition, with tears and insect damage to the supplemental pages; the Monroe/Adams document itself is fine and unaffected.
