James Michael Newell (American, b. 1900), “Rural Family”, c. 1940; plaster fresco secured to a board, 26” x 26”, signed. Newell was best known for his work as a mural painter. He was a member of the Architectural League in New York, and taught at the Art Students League. There is a known fresco at the Potomac Electric Power Company, Washington, D.C. A fresco is accomplished by adding layers of pigment to wet plaster, so that the painting becomes part of the structure.
