James Malton (1761-1803) A PICTURESQUE
James Malton (1761-1803) A PICTURESQUE AND DESCRIPTIVE VIEW OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN, 1792-1799 each inscribed “James Malton del. et fecit.” in the plate etching and aquatint (15) plus accompanying letterpress with ownership signature on front (unframed) 26 by 38cm., 10.25 by 15in. Provenance: James Gandon, architect (1743-1823); Property of a gentleman Literature: Walter Strickland, A Dictionary of Irish Artists, Vol. II, IUP, Shannon, 1968, pages 91-95; Elmes and Hewson, Catalogue of Irish Topographical Prints and Original Drawings, Malton Press, Dublin, 1975, no. 2064, page 156 The complete first three folios issued. Thirteen of the prints are first state and the remaining two of Trinity College and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin are the extremely rare and highly desirable only state. First folio, issued October – November 1792: plates I, II, III, IV, extra plate A (the Arms of Dublin) and extra plate B (Survey of the City of Dublin as it stood in 1610, from Speed’s map). Second folio, issued July 1793: plates V, VI, VII, VIII, extra plate C (College Library, Dublin). Third folio, issued autumn 1794: plates IX, X, XI and XII. It is recorded that James Malton was articled to James Gandon for three years but did not complete the full term by mutual agreement. There is speculation that they sniped at each other subsequently; none the less Malton in his descriptive texts for those prints which mention Gandon is generous of the great architect’s achievements. An impeccable association copy of what Elmes and Hewson describe as “the most important series of engravings of Dublin”.
