Partially printed Bank of Columbia personal check, 6.5 x 2.5, filled out and signed by Madison, payable to Abraham Lands for $48.00, September 19, 1819. Impressively archivally double cloth matted with his likeness and framed to an overall size of 14.25 x 18.75. In fine condition, with a few tiny tears and scattered toning and soiling. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries partially printed checks were not yet commonly used, and checks of that era were usually entirely completed by hand, more closely resembling promissory notes. As such, partially printed examples of early presidents are significantly rarer than their manuscript counterparts. Written two years after leaving the presidency, this desirable check was penned as Madison was living at Montpelier, and attempting to recoup his depleted assets following the financial collapse of his tobacco plantation.
