LS, one page, 8 x 9.75, December 6, 1804. Letter to the governor of the Mississippi Territory. In full: “Agreeably to an Act of Congress, entitled ‘An Act for the more general promulgation of the Laws of the United States, passed 3rd March 1795, and the Acts in addition thereto Passed on the 2nd March 1799 and on the 27th March 1804, I have transmitted to the Collector of the Customs in Philadelphia Sixty Two copies of the Laws of the United States 1st Session 8th Congress being the proportion for the Mississippi Territory with a request that he would forward them to your Excellency.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, vertical strip of adhesive show-through along left edge, and a few creases.

After centuries of control by several European powers, the land that would ultimately become the state of Mississippi was organized in 1798. Government for this new territory was patterned after the 1787 Northwest Ordinance which established a governor, secretary, and three judges to serve as a ruling council. During this period, the territory’s leaders tried to maintain harmony while struggling with the establishment of a federal government and a divisive path towards statehood. Oddly enough, this page reflects the territory being notified of the laws of the United States, even though such laws would not be applicable for another thirteen years.
