Partly-printed DS as president, two pages, 12 x 14.75, April 4, 1810. Patent issued to James Ramsey for an ”improvement in making Earthen or Clay Tubes for Aqueducts.” In part: “Whereas James Ramsey a Citizen of the United States, hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement in making Earthen or Clay Tubes for Aqueducts &c which improvement he states has not been known or used before his application; hath made oath that he does verily believe that he is the true inventor or discoverer of the said improvement, has paid into the treasury of the United States, the sum of thirty dollars, delivered a receipt for the same, and presented a petition to the Secretary of State, signifying a desire of obtaining an exclusive property in the said improvement, and praying that a patent may be granted for that purpose.” Signed at the conclusion of the first page by Madison, and countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith and Attorney General C. A. Rodney. Second page bears a handwritten description of the improvement, beginning, “This Machine is composed to two Cylinders formed of Wood with Metalic dressings…” and signed at the conclusion by Ramsey. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered moderate toning and soiling, heavier to second page, a few small holes of paper loss to both pages, and scattered edge wear and chipping. The white paper seal is worn, but intact, and the pages are still bound by the original green ribbon. Madison’s signature remains crisp and clear despite the flaws.
