Rare partly-printed DS, one page, 8.25 x 10, February 20, 1808. As secretary of state, Madison issues a rare personal passport to William Lewis. In part: “I certify, that…William Lewis, an officer of the Navy of the United States, and charged with Dispatches from this Government, is a Citizen of the United States. These are therefore to pray all whom it may concern to permit the said William Lewis to pass wheresoever his lawful concerns may call him, freely and without let or molestation in going, staying or returning.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by Madison, and endorsed on the reverse and the second adjoining page by a number of French and English government officials. The paper seal affixed to the left side remains intact, and two wax seals are affixed to the reverse. Attractively double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 32 x 19, with a window in the backing for viewing the reverse; the document is displayed unfolded so that all pages can be seen. In very good condition, with intersecting folds and prominently toned areas from the seals. Oversized.
