Partly printed check, 7.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Madison, payable to Abraham Lands or bearer for $58.37, September 19, 1819. Cancellation cut to body, reinforced on the reverse with archival semi-transparent glassine tape, pencil mark to body, scattered light toning and foxing, a central vertical fold, and two other small pieces of tape on reverse, otherwise very good condition. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries partially printed checks were not yet commonly used, and checks of that era were usually entirely completed by hand, more closely resembling promissory notes. As such, partially printed examples of early presidents are significantly rarer than their manuscript counterparts.
