Partly printed DS, signed “James Madison” as president and “Jas. Monroe” as secretary of state, one page, 11 x 15.5, May 20, 1815. Scalloped-top ship’s pass issued for “the Brig South Carolina, Henry Hutchison, master and commander…mounted with no guns navigated with eleven men.” Signed at the conclusion by both Madison and Monroe. Framed, and apparently mounted, to an overall size of 15.25 x 19. In good to very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of Monroe’s signature, scattered light toning, soiling and creasing, document’s handwritten text fairly light, but legible, and Madison’s signature uniformly light, but still legible. The white paper seal is toned but intact. Accompanied by a book entitled Lorrain’s Sea Sermons by Alfred Lorrain, whose countersignature appears on the bottom of the document.
