Partly-printed DS, signed "James Madison" as president and "Jas. Monroe" as secretary of state, one page, 21.25 x 16.5, January 4, 1812. A four-language ship's papers issued to James Lister, "master or commander of the schooner called Martha…lying at present in the port of the Boston bound for France and laden with Fish.” Signed in the central margin by both James Madison and James Monroe. Left portion bears two embossed paper seals. In fine condition, with light toning along one of the horizontal folds. An unusually clean example with clear, dark autographs of America's fourth and fifth presidents.
