James Madison Manuscript Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", Washington, June 22, 1808. In full: "Washington Department of State, June 22, 1808, In answer to your letter of the 15th inst. which is just received, I am sorry to inform you that this Department is still unacquainted with the Result of the application which was made several years ago in the Case of Brig Matilda to his Government by the Swedish Consul in this Country. When the last Enquiries were made of him on this subject, he was uninformed, himself, of what had been done in it. An early opportunity will be taken to renew these Enquiries, and if W. Saderstrom should have received any information, it will be communicated to you. I am, respectfully, Sir, Your Obed:. Servt. James Madison"

After contentious nomination within his own Republican Party, James Madison was elected fourth president of United States in 1808. Just before Madison took office, the Embargo Act of 1807 was repealed as a failure. Madison remained preoccupied with maritime and trade disputes with both France and Great Britain as well as longstanding quarrel with Spain over American claims. The present example is but one more pressing issue of foreign affairs that would occupy his term as president. Integral address leaf still attached, with customary folds, otherwise crisp and clean. Very fine condition.
