<B>James Madison and James Monroe Signed Ship's Papers Document Signed.</B></I> One page, 10.5" x 15.5", partly printed, on vellum, Baltimore, December 3, 1811, signed by Madison as president and "<I>Jas Monroe</B></I>" as secretary of state. This attractive document has the indented or scalloped top and is a pass for "the Schooner <I>Fly</B></I> of Baltimore, John Dameron, master or commander of the burthen of one hundred & thirty five 22/96th tons or thereabouts mounted with Two guns, navigated with nineteen men." Formerly Thomas Jefferson's secretary of state, Madison was our fourth president (1809-1817) and co-author of the <I>Federalist Papers.</B></I> He is traditionally regarded as the Father of the United States Constitution. James Monroe succeeded Madison as our fifth president (1817-1825) and was the author of the Monroe Doctrine. His presidency is known as the "Era of Good Feelings." This document is in fine condition with its wafer seal intact and is matted in blue silk and gilt fillets with matching vintage engravings and engraved brass plates. All framed to an overall size of 39.5" x 28.5".
