"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Interesting archive of documents relating to the family of President James Madison, including legal disputes, indenture and slave inquest documents. Lot includes: (1) Indenture dated 12 November 1804 written by the President's niece and ward, Nelly Conway Madison, for ''…various tracts or parcels of land in the state of Kentucky…'' According to the Papers of James Madison at the University of Virginia, the issue of the Kentucky lands owned by President James Madison, his father James Madison, Sr., and his brother Ambrose was complicated by the facts that brothers Francis and Ambrose Madison had died several years before their Father. This raised the question of which, if any, of the grandchildren were entitled to a share of lands that their grandfather might have bequeathed to their fathers. This Indenture was intended to settle that matter. (2) James Madison Sr. signed document, dated 11 June 1772, pertaining to ''holding an inquest on the body of Dover a Negro man slave belonging to Wm. Crawford of the county of Culpeper.'' (3) A 1767 deposition signed by James Madison, Sr. (4) A 1771 James Madison, Sr. signed receipt for supplies including ''2 bed cords,'' ''8 nails,'' ''1 quart mug'' and ''1 drum line.'' (5) James Madison, Sr. signed document regarding an agreement regarding tobacco. (6) A legal document, regarding assault and battery, signed by lawyer John Madison, presumably the President's uncle, in 1772. The document is signed by John Madison three times in relation to the case. (7) Two documents and depositions signed by James Madison, Sr. in estate matters of non-family members. All items in very good condition with no significant flaws.
