James Madison 1811 Naval Document Signed
James Madison 1811 Naval Document Signed “James Madison”. One page, 10” x 15”, on vellum, vignettes of a lighthouse and sailing ship, Baltimore, June 14, 1811, with United States seal intact. James Madison, 4th President of the United States, has signed this document which provides for the named ship's commander to “pass with Company Passengers, Goods and Merchandise without any hindrance seizure or molestation”. The document has been countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith, which makes for something of a mystery. Smith was forced to resign from the Secretary of State position on April 1, 1811 and was replaced by James Monroe. Why Smith's signature appears on this document a full three months is quite curious. The document has the usual fold creases, two small pin-prick holes the folds, two areas of staining, the ink has faded slightly, else very good. Ex. Henry E.
