Dalzell Two Autograph Manuscripts Signed</B></I>, an original poem “The Blue and the Gray of 1867”, 8.5” X 13”, two pages of four pages conjoined, April 1867, Washington, D.C.; and, a revision of the same poem, 8.5” X 14”, two pages of four pages conjoined, May 30, 1916, Soldier’s Home, Dayton, Ohio. The original poem bound with archival tape, else both fine.<BR>Dalzell’s original poem was filled with rancor, “<I>Let Oblivion seal up their graves,/ Of Treason, Disgrace, and Defeat./ Had they triumphed the Blue had been slaves/ And the Union were lost in retreat.</B></I>” In a note attached to his revised poem, Dalzell tells how he changed, “<I>At the great age of seventy seven, looking back over the graves of the men of both sides who fell in the war, the billowing mounds of green, scattered all over the land, drew forth my tears, and in the dim perspective these humble mounds seemed to blend into one. I could see no difference.
