Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15 x 18.5, July 18, 1848. President Polk promotes Captain Benjamin Alvord to “the rank of Major by Brevet…for gallant and meritorious conduct in several affairs with Guerrilleros at Paso Ovejas National Bridge, and Cerro Gordo, Mexico.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by Polk and countersigned by Secretary of War William L. Marcy. The white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains fully intact. Nicely framed to an overall size of 19.5 x 23. In fine condition, with intersecting folds; extremely clean and visually appealing. Alvord served as chief of staff to Major Lally's column during its march from Vera Cruz to Mexico City in 1847 and rallied a successful defense of the convoy during four separate attacks. He went on to become a nationally recognized mathematician. A choice military appointment from a defining period of Polk’s administration.
