Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 14 x 17.25, March 24, 1847. President Polk appoints William H. Churchill to be an “Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain in the service of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Polk and countersigned by Secretary of War William Marcy. Document is affixed to an identical size board and is partially matted to an overall size of 17 x 20. Scattered toning and soiling, handwritten portions of document, as well as Polk’s signature light, but legible, otherwise very good condition. The white wafer seal is crisp and intact. Churchill served in the Mexican War and was promoted to brevet-captain in May 1846 for gallantry and distinguished service in the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, Texas.
