Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 10.25 x 6.75, February 3, 1848. President Polk appoints Charles E. Fleming “a Master in the Navy of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Polk, and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy John Mason. Archivally double matted and framed with a portrait of Polk and a small name plaque to an overall size of 16.75 x 22.5. In good condition, with three vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered toning and creasing, handwritten portions a few shades light, but still legible, skipping to Polk’s signature, and Mason’s signature very light, but still mostly legible. The seal is missing. Any Polk military document is quite scarce, particularly naval appointments.
