Polk</B></I></B></I>"<B> as President,</B></I> one page, 15 x 18 inches on vellum, Washington, December 4, 1846 appointing Jenks Beaman as a "<I>First Lieutenant in the Fourth Regiment of Infantry...</B></I>" Countersigned by <B>William L. Marcy</B></I> as Secretary of War. Jenks was a 1842 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and served during the Mexican War in the Fourth Infantry. During his service in the field he was promoted to First Lieutenant. The 4th Infantry first served under Zachary Taylor's army of observation and saw action at Monterrey. The 4th then sailed to Vera Cruz where it besieged the city and then advanced on Mexico City. Beaman died on May 6, 1848 only a month before his regiment was due to return to the United States.
