<B>James K. Polk Autograph Letter Signed.</B></I> Two pages, 8" x 9.75", Columbia, [Tennessee], June 4, 1842 to Major John H. Billy concerning the mishandling of family lands by an agent entrusted to manage them. He writes, in part: "<I>Since I have been giving some attention as executor of my brother Samuel to his lands in the District, I learn that some of them have been sold for taxes. James Walker, who attended exclusively to this part of the business of my father's estate -- Knew nothing on the subject, - further than that yourself and Majr. McNab...attended to the payment of taxes on all the lands in which the estate was intrusted </B></I>[sic]<I>. Among the tracts - belonging to Samuel W. Polk's estate which I learn have been sold for taxes are the following, to wit. - 72 acres part of a tract in the name of Masey in Perry County; 110 acres part of a tract in the name of Harris in Perry County; - 43 acres Granted to my father in Madison County and 800 acres granted to my father in Fayette County. I would thank you to give me any information which you may have in relation to the payment of taxes on these lands...</B></I>" With integral address leaf, filled out in his hand which also bears a penciled A.N.S. of <B>Sarah Polk</B></I>, [no place, no date], apparently to a collector: "<I>If you only take the signature please return me the letter Mrs J. Polk</B></I>".
