James K. Polk: A Rare 1844 Political Broadside
James K. Polk: A Rare 1844 Political Broadside From Lancaster, Pennsylvania Announcing a Torchlight Procession. Of the many subcategories of political campaign items, few are collected with the fervor of these early broadsides from presidential campaigns. This one is particularly nice for two reasons: Polk items of any kind are hard to come by, with display pieces the toughest of all. Secondly, this broadside advertises and describes in detail a torchlight parade. Collectors have a great fascination with these 19th century processionals, which seemed to have been at the heart of political campaigns of the day. "Every Democrat is Respectfully invited to illuminate his dwelling, and also to join in the procession" this broadside announces. "It is earnestly hoped that every man will come provided with his transparency or lantern".

Overall, it has a very pleasing display appearance, free of major damage and staining of any kind. There is some edge roughness, as shown in the photo, which the last owner felt added character to its display appearance, choosing to frame it tipped onto a background rather than matting it to easily cover this condition. Some slight deterioration along the original quarter-fold lines does not detract. A rare and graphic Polk item with great display presence. Measures 14" x 18.25", 17" x 21.5" as nicely custom framed.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
